Final concept for Sofi
Here’s the final approved concept for Sofi, Lucidity’s heroine. In-game Sofi was modeled in 3D, but she needed to appear as if she was 2D to maintain consistency with the rest of the world.
Andrea Rhodes, Lucidity’s concept artist, used the motion of her beanie, her shape, and the paper texture quality of her outfit to reinforce her “flatness.”
Here you can see how Andrea’s final 2D image ended up being rendered into 3D.
David Nottingham, Jeff Sangalli & Andrea Rhodes talk about the final character:
David: “Getting a 3D model to adhere to the spirit of 2D concept art is always a huge challenge. Often you see this amazing piece of concept art and then you see the final model and think ‘what happened?’ We were all really happy with how Sofi turned out. Joy Chung did a fantastic job in preserving the integrity of Andrea’s unique style.”
Jeff: “It was really important to make sure the 3D model didn’t look out of place against the 2D hand painted environments, so all the textures were hand painted. I think what also really helped integrate the model was our use of lighting. Instead of using dynamic lighting, we applied a color tint to the model in game to make it feel flatter.”
Andrea: “I was totally blown away when I saw Joy’s model. It’s the first time I’ve ever seen my work translated into 3D and wow, was I ever given a treat. The ultimate compliment for Joy was having fellow artists see the artwork on the wall. They said they couldn’t tell that it was a 3D model.”
